Schools Tour 2026 – Little Red

Little Red is not impressed! Her mum has a new boyfriend, Don. But….when Little Red meets Don’s talking pet dog, Wolfie, things take an unexpectedly wonderful turn. Set to Mozart’s sparkling music from Don Giovanni, this lively new opera for children is full of humour, heart and glorious tunes.

Our children’s opera is a 40-minute performance designed to appeal to primary school children (and their teachers). The performance is followed by question time and an opportunity for budding theatrical musical enthusiasts to explore the set, interact with the performers and consider what it might take to forge a career in the arts.

Suitable for Kindergarten to Year 6

FFO will tour Little Red from 27th April to 5th June 2026. Please get in touch with gm@freezeframeopera.com for more details and to book.

Schools Tour 2024 – The Magic Kazoo

Being a kid is dangerous business! Negotiating friendship, a furious mother and anxiety about starting a new school term is, literally, a nightmare for Tamino. Luckily, he has his favourite toy, Papageno, to console him, and the power of music sets him on his way to rescue Pamina from the Kingdom of the Night. Is it a dream, or are they really awake?

Tommaso Pollio cleverly adapts Mozart’s score and performs on piano. Keaton Staszewski-Hose, James Pinneri, and Charis Postmus accompany Prudence Sanders to sing the libretto created by Penny Shaw.

The Tour

In May 2024, Freeze Frame Opera brought The Magic Kazoo to life 31 times, reaching more than 6,000 children across the Perth metropolitan area. Our school tours offer students the opportunity to experience live performances that spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and foster a deeper connection to their learning environment, thereby enriching their overall educational experience.

This incredible achievement would not have been possible without the generosity of our donors and supporters. A heartfelt thank you to The Stan Perron Charitable Foundation and Hawaiian for helping us share the magic of opera with the next generation.

FFO AT THE MOVIES, 17-20 November 2016

FFO launched in November 2016 at PSAS, Fremantle. Our launch concert, AT THE MOVIES, had all the best bits from movie soundtracks including The Shawshank Redemption, Pretty Woman, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and more, performed by some of WA’s most talented opera singers.

Director, Andries Wiedemann, Designer, Robbie Harrold, pianist Aidan Boase, Lady Diamond and a stellar cast of singers including Emma Pearson (soprano), Jun Zhang (tenor), Ileana Rinaldi (mezzo-soprano),  Harriet Marshall and Emma Pettemerides (sopranos) brought opera from the movies back to the stage.

In addition to the amazing singing, the experience was enhanced by a projection designed by Robbie Harrold, the appearance of the wonderful Lady Diamond, and the sponsorship by Cobs popcorn for a real “at the movies” experience.

ABOUT THE OPERAS:

These two one-act operas are in very different styles and take us to the opposite corners of human experience. Both have family at the heart of them, and a plot that hinges on inheritance. Suor Angelica is about a nun pressured to sign away her inheritance by a family that has rejected her. We push against the sentimentality of the piece by taking it out of the convent and putting it in a modern rehab centre.
Addiction affects families of all kinds, and the links between family trauma and addictive behaviour are well documented.

Gianni Schicchi is a screwball comedy lifted straight from Dante’s Inferno. Someone rich has died and the vultures descend. In our version, the corpse is barely cold and the removalists are already stripping the house out. This story concludes with the hero asking if he deserves to be sent to hell for a redistribution scheme with an upside. In both operas the protagonists are trying to survive within a very flawed world. Laughing or crying, naturalism or farce, it is all the same thing. The gloriousand messy business of life.

Director’s statement – Adam Mitchell

This is my first time working with FFO (I’ve long been a secret admirer), and it  has been a really wonderful adventure. What a special company this is!

Puccini describes La Fanciulla as his ‘finest work, his most successful opera’, and that is a big statement as it followed Madama Butterfly. It is an incredibly ambitious undertaking for any opera company, let alone our merry troupe of independent artists, to stage The Girl of the Golden West. Certainly, I find La Fanciulla Puccini’s most romantic score, and possibly one of his most musically demanding.

The jumping-off point aesthetically for our La Fanciulla was a series of photographs of the town on the west coast of America, called Trona, taken by documentary photographer Tobias Zielony (look them up; they are fantastic!). Originally a frontier town, it was built on the myth of the Wild West, exploiting individualistic freedom and the taming of the natural world. Trona moved from mining gold and silver at the turn of the century to today, where its main production is sadly methamphetamine.

There are many such towns in our own backyard. Settlements that once encouraged daring explorers west have also drawn misplaced and unwelcome vagrants into the undertow. The original protagonists of Western epics are often misfits or outcasts, and this is what’s celebrated in La Fanciulla. This is an opera that unusually sees our heroine, Minnie (a hard-working bar owner), win big in the hard-drinking world of men, and we love her for it. La Fanciulla is firmly set  in the cultural echoes of the American Dream and the lament of longing to blaze  brighter than you are.

I would like to thank the cast, creative team (particularly our brilliant Musical  Director, Tommaso), musicians, and everyone at FFO and beyond for making this possible. I hope you enjoy your journey to the frontier.
